My Project

I was recently interviewed and accepted to participate as a People to People Student Ambassador to England and Scotland this summer. The objective of the program is to promote international understanding while building leadership skills among America's youth. The 20-day experience includes meetings with government officials, interaction with other students my age, educational activities and home stays with host families.

I am currently asking my family, friends and community businesses for financial sponsorship to help me with tuition, and I hope I can count on your support. In case you haven't heard of People to People, I have enclosed a description of my program. President Dwight D. Eisenhower founded the organization in 1956. He believed that if people from different cultures could come together in peace and friendship, so eventually would countries.

People to People Ambassadors are carefully interviewed and evaluated before their acceptance and I am honored to have been selected. Personally, I am looking forward to broadening my perspectives of the world and gaining a better understanding of England and Scotland. When I return, I will share my experience with all of my sponsors and with everyone I know & meet as I complete my fundraising project. As an Ambassador, I can also earn high school and college credit because of the many educational elements of my program. This experience will increase my understanding of the world and give me the opportunity to learn firsthand about new places and cultures. Such knowledge will help me become the best citizen I can be.

My personal goal is to raise $6000 to fund my tuition and personal funds for an exciting 20 day journey; in raising funds I had many options to choose from, including writing sponsorship letters to my family, friends and community businesses. Though I want to raise enough money to fund my trip, I've decided that I want to do more than just focus on myself and my journey.

Personal Splendor is a project to raise money for my personal goal of Student Ambassador tuition assistance while committing to help others. Throughout the remainder of 2005 and until May of 2006, I am committing to use my special skills and talents, in partnership with Children's Miracle Network and Ronald McDonald House of Durham, to give back to children who will never have the opportunity to experience a journey to another country, seriously ill children at Duke Children's Hospital.

I am asking for your support and sponsorship so that I can reach all the goals outlined in Project Personal Splendor.

Project Personal Splendor

Part 1

Visit Duke Children's Hospital or Ronald McDonald House once a month from December 2005 — May 2006 to meet and get-to-know as many terminally ill children as I can and to volunteer my time to help bring smiles of happiness.

53,000 children die each year in the U.S. from terminal illnesses, thousands of these children spend their last months of life in the confines of a hospital bed. Just like me, each of these children want to have friends, people who love them and care enough about them to want to see them smile.

I know that it's hard for most people to see past the disabilities or effects of illness and see the inner beauty inside these children. That's why I named my fundraising project Personal Splendor because I believe that even though these children have terminal illnesses they are still children, just like me, with hopes, dreams, hobbies and joys — individual inner beauty and courage that is more than any normal kid can imagine.

Part 2

Donate 50 Personal Splendor Yearbooks to Duke Children's Hospital. I will be completing a Personal Splendor Yearbook that will include special stories from the children I meet at Duke Children's Hospital, photos & stories from my 2006 Student Ambassador Journey and highlights from my year as a Student Ambassador.

It is important for me to recognize not only the honor that I have to be a Student Ambassador and travel to England & Scotland, but also the reality that thousands of terminally ill children will never have the chance to see the places that I visit. I want to create a Yearbook of my experiences, dedicated to the children of Duke Children's Hospital, which will bring my experiences on my journey to them.

I will complete these books in July of 2006 after returning from my journey and will deliver the Yearbooks personally in August 2006 so that I can share in the smiles that I know they will bring.

My Fundraising Goals

My 2006 Student Ambassador fundraising program has three parts, my Student Ambassador Goal, Production Goal and Duke Children's Hospital contributions.

Production Goal: Cost for production of 50 Personal Splendor Yearbook's at $29.99 each — totaling $1500.

Duke Children's Hospital & Ronald McDonald House of Durham: All contributions above and beyond what is needed for my Student Ambassador Journey or Production of the Personal Splendor Yearbook will go to Duke Children's Hospital and Ronald McDonald House of Durham.
